After an earlier leak revealed that Apple would bring its A18 chipset to all iPhone 16 models later this year, it appears that the company has big plans for its iPad family, too. The latest information claims that several tablets are in the works, and there is a chance that these will be outfitted with the upcoming M5 and A17 Pro.
iPad mini is expected to be one of the models that will be refreshed, and assuming that it does, the update was long overdue
A low-cost iPad, followed by the iPad mini and refreshed iPad Pro models, are expected to arrive at an undisclosed time, and thanks to the eagle-eyed @nicolas09F9, their identifiers have come through. A total of eight models have been listed by @aaronp613, with the highest number belonging to the iPad Pro. Just like the ones kitted out with the M4, the new ones will retain the 11-inch and 13-inch screen sizes. However, this time, they will feature the M5.
For those wondering, we reported in August last year that Apple was well ahead of the competition, with a leak revealing that the technology giant was working on the A19 and M5 series of chipsets. The identifiers iPad17,1 and iPad17,2 are seemingly for the Wi-Fi-only and Cellular versions of the 11-inch iPad Pro, while the iPad17,3 and iPad17,4 are for the bigger 13-inch variant. As for the low-cost slate, Apple could include the A16 Bionic, making it a sizable improvement compared to the A14 Bionic fueling the current generation.
In addition to the 5 iPhone identifiers reported yesterday, the following iPad identifiers were found (and @AppleDBdev 's guesses as to what they might be):
iPad13,20 - A14 Wi-Fi base model (scrapped)
iPad13,21 - A14 Cellular base model (scrapped)
iPad15,3 - M3 11-inch Pro Wi-Fi…— Aaron (@aaronp613) July 4, 2024
Next up, we have the iPad mini, which has not been updated since 2021, and with its identifiers iPad16,1 and iPad 16,2 indicating the arrival of two models paired with the A17 Pro that also powers the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, we should be in for a memorable treat. Unfortunately, it is not mentioned when Apple plans to introduce these, but given that the 11-inch and 13-inch M4 iPad Pro models just recently launched, the more premium products could take their sweet time to arrive.
The leak also mentions some iPad Pro models that were apparently scrapped, and assuming these guesses are legit, Apple had planned to launch them with the M3. Thankfully, the Cupertino firm introduced a significantly improved chipset to the announcement, and we certainly hope that the M5 will be even more capable.
