Google's I/O 2024 unveiled some extensive software upgrades, one of which involved boosting up the battery life. The Android 15 beta 2 teased major improvements for its Android devices, including Google's efforts to improve battery life by up to three hours on some models.
Android 15 promises longer standby battery life compared to other devices, bringing doze time to now 50 percent
At the I/O 2024 event, Google announced that it would improve standby battery life for some devices by up to 3 hours. The company achieved this with the help of Doze mode, which was first introduced with Android 6.0. In Doze mode, the system automatically caps app activities and system access to prevent battery drainage.
Additionally, Doze mode monitors backend tasks and prevents apps from running in the background when not in use. Now, with the latest battery updates, the processing time to doze would be brought to 50 percent, speeding up the time and improving the standby power. This change would be a major contributor to improving the battery's standby time for Android 15.
While speaking to the Android Authority, Dave Burke, Vice President of the Engineering Department at the Android platform, explained how this improvement process was achieved.
For Android 15, we’ve sped up the time to doze by 50%. So we get into doze 50% faster, and the result is that on some devices, we tested up to 3 hours longer standby power. And that’s sort of a general improvement in 15 that applies to all devices.
This improvement in battery life would be extended to all devices that support Android 15, as it is an update for one of the core features of Android. Google's WearOS for wearables will also be part of this upgrade, although the smartwatch's platform is based on Android 14.
Wear0S 5 follows the same background task scheme, but the Doze mode in Android 15 has some significant improvements. WearOS 6 is expected to be released next year, and the Doze Mode feature can be expected to be part of the upgrades based on Android 15.
Earlier this week, along with the significant work done by Google to speed up the doze mode for longer battery life, the company revealed some vital new anti-theft features for enhanced security and better data protection. Some of the notable features include Private Space, Theft Detection Lock, Remote Lock Feature, Offline Device Lock, and Biometric Security. Google is constantly working to improve efficiency and provide robust protection in case of theft or scam.
