After a report surfaced a couple of days ago, the first Android 15 Developer Preview is finally here for all supported Pixel devices, starting from Pixel 6 and onwards. All the features that will be coming to the stable version will start from this developer preview and do note that Google could remove or add features going forward.
The first Android 15 Developer Preview does not bring a lot of surprises, but it certainly is off to a good start
Just like the previous versions of Android, Google has been focusing on privacy a lot more than before. The Android 15 Developer Preview brings a new and improved Privacy Sandbox suite to the latest update. The update also brings better file integrity functionality that utilizes the "fs-verity" feature from the Linux kernel. Google claims that “with fs-verity, files can be protected by custom cryptographic signatures, helping you ensure they haven’t been tampered with or corrupted." The company also talks about how this feature is going to offer better protection against malware and any file changes that were not authorized.
Android 15 is also going to benefit from Android Dynamic Performance Framework or ADPF, which the company announced a number of years ago. This framework allows the developers to optimize the performance of resource-hungry games and apps. The new operating system will take this suite even further and will offer power efficiency mode for hint sessions, gaming performance will also benefit from thermal headroom thresholds. Phones will also get support for GPU and CPU work durations. With these changes, developers will get a better way of balancing performance and efficiency in games, as well as any other app that requires more processing power.
Partial screen recording and sharing are things that we have been hearing about for some time now. With the latest Android 15 Developer Preview, Google is bringing this feature to the users. The feature works as intended - instead of recording the whole screen, it lets you record the specific portion of the screen that you actually need to share with someone. This certainly is a great way of improving privacy while being able to share the screen without any hiccups.
In addition to the highlights above, the first Android 15 Developer Preview brings several other options, like more comprehensive camera tools for third-party apps, better support for Health Connect, and support for virtual MIDI apps. I am sure there are a lot more features that are hidden within the latest update.
