A multitude of tests performed on the Ryzen 7 9700X will prove that this processor will always be slower than the Ryzen 9 9900X and, understandably, will be stamped with a smaller price. After all, it features an 8-core and 16-thread configuration, along with less L3 cache than the 12-core, 24-thread cousin. However, Amazon has somehow made the significantly powerful desktop processor more affordable, as the Ryzen 9 9900X is now available for $309.99 after a $190 price cut.
In comparison, the Ryzen 7 9700X is currently listed at $313.12, making the Ryzen 9 9900X a no-brainer if you want a CPU upgrade immediately. When it comes to gaming performance, the chip with the higher core count will deliver the edge thanks to its 76MB of L3 cache, but in this category, the processor will still be slower than the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, which rocks a whopping 96MB of cache. Sadly, it is either out of stock almost all the time or available at outrageous prices on Amazon. At the time of writing, the lowest figure that we spotted was $568.20.
Right now, you would have to spend an additional $262 to skip the Ryzen 9 9900X and get the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, but for the savings that you can avail, you can just as easily add a capable motherboard and an NVMe drive to the package. We believe that it will take a while for the Ryzen 7 9800X3D supply to stabilize, making the Ryzen 9 9900X the obvious choice when it comes to both gaming and productivity.
Hopefully, the aforementioned $309 price sticks around for longer because we bet that there are hundreds of potential buyers just wanting to get their hands on a CPU that strikes the ideal performance balance for a bevy of tasks and not just gaming.
Update - There has been a price surge of the Ryzen 9 9900X, with the 12-core, 24-thread CPU now listed for $384.73 on Amazon. Even then, it is 23 percent off, but it is slightly more expensive than the Ryzen 7 9700X.
