AMD Looks Ready For On-Launch Support At Linux With RDNA 4 "Radeon RX 8000" GPUs, Posts Further Patches Contributing To The Performance
Team Red has sped up things with pull requests on Linux when it comes to RDNA 4 support on the platform, and with the firm's "IP blocks" approach, they have indeed found themselves successful in putting out pre-launch support. Recently, we talked about how AMD brought in GFX12 support in Linux's kernel driver. Now, the firm has built upon initial support, enabling new kernel driver codes to provide extensive support for platform users.
Phoronix reports that AMD's newest patches target solving problems related to single root I/O virtualization (SR-IOV), power management issues, or simply routine work. The new patches haven't brought anything interesting besides enabling Delta Color Compression (DCC). For those unaware, DCC is a mechanism employed by modern-day GPUs to improve rendering efficiencies by exploiting the redundancy in color data.
This reduces memory bandwidth usage and faster performance, and its presence with RDNA 4 is a delight since it will cater to the overall performance. Team Red has bumped up next-gen support this time with its upcoming graphics architecture, and it looks like we are on track for complete enablement at the launch timeline, which is an exciting factor for AMD and its journey in the Linux community.
