AMD Raven Ridge Based Ryzen 5 2500U APU With Vega Graphics Benchmarked – Quad Core Design For Mobility Platforms

It looks like the first samples of AMD’s Raven Ridge APUs are already out in the wild as seen in a leak posted by Videocardz. The leak shows a notebook based AMD APU which not only features four Zen cores but also includes Vega graphics, suggesting that this could be our very first look at an AMD Raven Ridge based Ryzen APU.

There’s no word on what notebook was this APU found in but it’s confirmed to be a Raven Ridge APU. How can we be so sure? Well, Raven Ridge will be AMD’s first and only 2017 APU family to feature both Zen cores and Vega cores on the same die. Even the Ryzen mobility APUs which are announced for notebooks don’t feature any integrated graphics cores.

The specifications of the chip are very interesting. The chip is called the AMD Ryzen 5 2500U and we can see that AMD is once again following a naming scheme similar to Intel’s Core-U series on the mobility front. We are looking at a quad core CPU with eight threads. This confirms that multi-threading will be enabled on Raven Ridge Ryzen APUs.

The chip features the AMD 1500 Graphics which are based on the Vega graphics architecture and should deliver much higher performance than the GCN based APUs we have seen before. The naming scheme also suggests that the CPU family based around Raven Ridge will be known as the Ryzen 2000 series.

The chip was tested in the Ashes of Singularity benchmark using the standard 1080p preset and it scored 500 points. The frame rate for the CPU was decent but the graphics chip wasn’t that great. It looks like the AMD Vega iGPU is slightly slower than the Iris Graphics 640 which isn’t even Intel’s flagship Iris core. We believe that AMD still has some work to do on the Vega iGPUs and can expect slightly better performance by the time these chips launch.

AMD’s Raven Ridge Arriving Coming To Mobility First in 2H 2017, Desktop Launch in Early 2018 – Feature 4 Enhanced Zen Cores and 11 Vega GPU Cores

A previously leaked roadmap showcased that Raven Ridge, which is AMD’s new APU based on the Zen core architecture. AMD has stated that while Raven Ridge is the family name, all SKUs will be branded as Ryzen chips and will be heading for launch in 2H 2017. The roadmap also claims the possibility of Raven Ridge featuring enhanced Zen cores which could leverage from some enhancements that would later be adopted by the Zen 2 cores in the Pinnacle Ridge family.

On the GPU side, Raven Ridge will feature the brand new Vega GPU architecture. A total of 11 Vega GPU cores are featured on Raven Ridge. This rounds up to 704 stream processors which is a nice increase over 512 cores on Bristol Ridge. These small Vega cores would help boost the performance of integrated graphics processing on such chips. We can expect prices for these chips to be in the sub-$250 US range.

AMD has also confirmed that Raven Ridge SKUs will have a range of quad core variants with SMT enabled (4 core / 8 threads). Just like Pinnacle Ridge, Raven Ridge will be compatible with AM4 and support DDR4 memory. We can expect more updates on the Raven Ridge Ryzen family in the upcoming months as launch closes in.
