AMD's top RDNA 4 GPU, the Radeon RX 8800 XT, might end up being a strongly positioned mainstream product if the latest rumors are correct.
AMD's Radeon RX 8800 XT "RDNA 4" GPU Allegedly Offers Strong RT & Rasterization Uplifts While Keeping The Power Consumption At A Minimum
The latest rumor about the AMD RDNA 4 GPUs comes from Chiphell Forum member, zhangzhonghao, who previously revealed the Ryzen 9800X3D launch dates, which turned out to be accurate, and has also shared information on AMD's upcoming GPUs such as the next-next gen UDNA lineup. In his latest forum post, he talks about the upcoming flagship, the Radeon RX 8800 XT, which sounds very nice.
It is stated that the AMD RDNA 4 GPUs will officially enter the mass production stage in the middle of December, which is just a few weeks from now. This falls in line with the Q1 2025 release date which these GPUs are planned for, while the unveiling will take place at CES 2025. The top graphics card within the lineup is said to be the Radeon RX 8800 XT, though the naming structure might not be official, and the red team might end up using a different naming/branding convention for its new RDNA 4l lineup.
Coming to the juicy tidbits, it is mentioned that the AMD Radeon RX 8800 XT (RDNA 4) graphics card will feature 25% lower power consumption than the Radeon RX 7900 XTX. The 7900 XTX consumes around 350W of power in gaming on average, so we are looking at around 250-270W of power draw for the RDNA 4 GPU based on the Navi 48 SKU. This is around the same ballpark as the RTX 4070 Ti and its SUPER sibling which consume a similar amount of power in games.
In terms of performance, the AMD Radeon RX 8800 XT "RDNA 4" GPU is said to bring over a 45% uplift in ray tracing performance in games such as Resident Evil 4 Remake. Plenty of mainstream titles are said to have been tested with similar or bigger gains and AMD has already confirmed that RT and AI will see major improvements with the upcoming generation of graphics cards. The Sony PS5 also uses similar RT and AI engines as the RDNA 4 architecture and brings major uplifts in each respective area.
As for rasterization performance, the graphics card is said to match the RTX 4080 and RTX 4080 SUPER, which sounds great when taking into mind the lower power consumption.
It will be an interesting battle between the RTX 5070 and RX 8800 series cards. The graphics card will take on the mainstream segment, so pricing would be crucial, but for this amount of performance, we are expecting the cards to be priced around $500 US with anything lower being fantastic for the PC gaming masses.
