We have long been hearing and waiting for Instagram to arrive on iPad, and while speculations have been going around for quite some time, after more than a decade, the users' requests have finally been heard. The immensely popular platform can now be experienced on the native iPad app, which is optimized for larger screens and is available for download for those running iPadOS 15.1 or later versions.
After 15 long years, Instagram has finally arrived on iPad for a complete native experience
After years of anticipation, Instagram has finally listened to its users' long-requested demand by launching a dedicated iPad app. The new iPad app does not reinvent the wheel by mirroring the same layout as the iPhone. Instead, it optimizes the design according to the larger display, and the adjusted interface gives a smoother and more immersive experience.
Since Instagram remains focused on the short-video format, which is the major preference among users as well, the app launches straight to the Reels section, while Stories continue being pinned at the top. The Following feed, however, comes with new filters like All, Friends, and Latest, so that users have more control over who they want to see and what they see.
Instagram's iPad app also has a design that supports multitasking, as Reels can be played on full screen, while the comments can be viewed alongside. Direct Messages are displayed in split-pane view, allowing users to see both the inbox and the selected conversation side by side. This feature makes the experience feel more natural compared to the more cramped layout of the iPhone.
Instagram took so long to launch its iPad app because the platform had been focused on a mobile-first philosophy, leading to the experience of a larger screen being delayed, and also due to limited resources. With tablets gaining popularity for content consumption, Meta has finally come around to what users have long insisted on.
Instagram's iPad launch goes beyond a long-overdue arrival and highlights the platform's focus on growing and expanding its Reels-related content by bringing a native experience that capitalizes on the growing tablet usage.
