Apple issued the latest iOS 17.0.3 update yesterday, which was intended to mitigate the overheating issues experienced by users on the latest iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. The company kept its word regarding the performance of the A17 Pro, with early tests showing that the SoC’s capabilities remained unchanged after the update.

New single-core and multi-core scores appeared to be unaltered after installing iOS 17.0.3

It was determined that third-party apps such as Instagram, Uber, and Asphalt 9: Legends were responsible for the overheating issues prevailing on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Instagram has rolled out an update that seemingly resolves this issue, but there is no word on the remaining apps. Since the problem is apparently originating from the apps, Apple would not have any reason to gimp the performance of the A17 Pro, and to test that out, 9to5Mac made the iPhone 15 Pro Max go through multiple Geekbench 6 runs to see if that was true.

Before installing the iOS 17.0.3 update, a benchmark was conducted on the iPhone 15 Pro Max and then right after. Naturally, updating an iPhone means it will get hot, and running a benchmark immediately can have some performance differences. According to the results, Apple’s flagship obtained a single-core score of 2,875 and 7,006, respectively. After waiting for a while to let the A17 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max cool down, the test was run again.

However, this time, the iPhone 15 Pro Max secured a higher score of 2,941 and 7,523. 9to5Mac reports that the results based on the preliminary tests show that the variation in performance is the same, so the update did not change much. However, it will be interesting to see what improvements Apple made, if any. Remember, an earlier Genshin Impact gameplay showed severe stuttering and frame drops on the iPhone 15 Pro, suggesting that the A17 Pro was in thermal throttling territory.

We will see if the same problems persist, and assuming that they do, we expect Apple to either work with developers to iron out these issues or launch successive iOS updates to alleviate these problems.
