A growing number of companies are working on smartphones with thinner profiles as users seek more modern devices with a sleeker look. While we have been hearing about Samsung working on a "Slim" version of the Galaxy S25 for a while, the South Korean tech giant is not the only company that is trying their hands on a thinner smartphone, as Apple is reportedly working on an iPhone 17 "Slim" version to come out in 2025 and that might potentially come in place of the iPhone Plus. A recent listing shared on the smartphone database reveals that Samsung is, in fact, working on launching a new device that could be the 'Slim' version.

Thinner profiles have not only gained popularity in the foldable industry, but companies are actively seeking to bring out slimmer models of their flagship phones. We first got the report from ET News about Samsung and Apple opting for a Slim phone competition by introducing thinner versions of the Galaxy S25 and the iPhone 17, which we could see coming out in mid-2025.
Now, SmartPrix has shared the listing for smartphones, including "Galaxy" and the model number SM-S937U, in the GSMA IMEI database, where Samsung generally puts up the smartphones that are internally being tested and are in development. The launch usually happens half a year after the phone reaches the database. If we look at the model number, it is aligned with the naming convention opted for in the Galaxy S series, and it seems like the new model follows the same pattern.
The U seems to represent the potential US release, and apart from this, there is currently scarce information available on the upcoming Slim model. Given that bringing out a slim Galaxy would require changes to the processor and display, we can expect Samsung to bring a new and fresh design to accommodate the thinner profile.
Simultaneously, the rumor mill seems to be churning in full swing about the iPhone's 17 slim variant that could potentially come in Q3 of 2025 or about the same time as the Galaxy S25 Slim model. The expectation is that it would be on the higher end, potentially surpassing the iPhone Pro Max. Given how the tech giants are working on a slimmer smartphone, this trend could be picked up by others in the industry, and we could see a sleeker category catering to users who look for more than AI features when upgrading.
