The latest Android Canary build has gone a long way to make Android-to-Apple switchover a relative breeze. Meanwhile, Apple's implementation of the feature has not been packaged within the soon-to-be-released iOS 26.2 update, and is now likely to land at a future date.

The latest Android Canary build for Google Pixel makes it a breeze to switch to an Apple iPhone

The Android Canary 2512 build for Pixel smartphones includes a collaboration between Google and Apple, one that makes it a fairly straightforward process to switch from a Pixel device to an Apple iPhone.

While Canary builds are not meant for a public release, the feature does give us some inkling as to the architecture that both Apple and Google are now adopting to enhance their cross-platform compatibility.

An APK teardown has revealed that the feature will activate during the device setup process, and allow for a seamless porting over of your personal files, which include:

  1. Photos and videos
  2. MP3 and audio files
  3. Contacts stored on the device or in the cloud, including iCloud
  4. SMS, RCS messages, and iMessages, including those with photos, videos, emoji reactions, and other attachments
  5. Documents and downloads
  6. Calendar appointments stored on the device or synced in the cloud, including iCloud.
  7. Apps at no charge which are matched to Google Play
  8. WhatsApp chat history
  9. Voice memos
  10. Notes
  11. Call history
  12. Home screen app layout and custom wallpapers
  13. Device settings:
    • Alarms
    • Saved Wi-Fi SSIDs
    • Font size
    • Screen timeout settings

The following, however will not port over:

  1. In-app purchases
  2. Device settings, such as Wi-Fi passwords
  3. DRM-protected music
  4. Safari bookmarks
  5. Paid and unavailable apps on Google Play
  6. Some app data, such as data from apps that aren’t stored in the cloud

Of course, this is not the first such attempt in recent days to enhance the cross-platform compatibility between Android and iOS.

As we reported recently, Google has been able to reverse engineer Apple's AirDrop feature, allowing Pixel 10 devices to use the Quick Share functionality to transfer files to an iPhone.

This workaround, however, remains at Apple's whims, as the Cupertino giant can choose to shut down the channels that Google is using to force Android's Quick Share and Apple's AirDrop file transfer functions to work in sync with each other.

iOS 26.2 update nears an official launch

Meanwhile, the upcoming iOS 26.2 update does not include Apple's implementation of the iPhone-to-Android switchover feature, indicating that the feature is likely to land at a future date.

Also, Apple has just released a second Release Candidate (RC) build for iOS 26.2, which indicates that the finished update is likely to land within days, most probably during the ongoing week.

For the benefit of those who might not be aware, the iOS 26.2 update includes the following changes, as gleaned from the recent beta updates:

Three major changes to the Podcast app:

The Apple News app is now slated to get four new sections:

Apple Games app - a central hub for all gaming activity on Apple's devices - gets 3 new features in iOS 26.2:

  1. Now you can filter your game library by titles your friends are playing, as well as by size or those that support challenges.
  2. Improved controller compatibility during app navigation.
  3. Challenge scores now get updated in real-time.

Other changes:

  1. You can now remove pinned messages on CarPlay
  2. A Liquid Glass slider for customizing the appearance of the clock on the lock screen, allowing you to adjust the opacity of the clock to your liking.
  3. You can now create an alarm with the Reminders app. When a Reminder alarm goes off, it displays a snooze option and a slide to stop option. The snooze option can be replaced with a 'mark as complete" option.
  4. Apple has also changed how Sleep Score tracks your sleep, with 'Very High' replacing 'Excellent' as the highest sleep category, and additional changes to each category's thresholds.
  5. EU users will now be able to choose a default digital assistant other than Siri and use the Live Translation feature with AirPods.
  6. AirDrop will now allow you to share a file with another Apple user who is not in your contacts for up to 30 days.

Finally, do note that the iPadOS 26.2 update features the following changes:

  1. The Freeform app now lets you use tables
  2. Apple Music lyrics now work while your device is offline.
