Samsung unveils Gauss generative AI model ahead of Galaxy S24 launch

OpenAI recently announced its most significant update for GPT-4, which brings major enhancements to the table. While the company is well ahead in its game, smartphone manufacturers are beginning to adopt the technology. It has been discovered that Samsung plans to use its custom generative AI model, Samsung Gauss, in its upcoming Galaxy S24 series. The company showcased Gauss at its AI forum this week and how it can create and edit images, summarize documents, and feature coding assistance.

Samsung's Gauss generative AI model will be available on the Galaxy S24 lineup that can generate text, provide coding assistant, and more

It was recently reported that Apple has been working on its generative AI technology and has invested quite a bit in it. The company is expected to debut its generative AI technology with the launch of iOS 18 next year. Mark Gurman reported that Apple will gradually roll out AI features to its devices over time. Seemingly, Samsung is expected to introduce Gauss by launching its upcoming Galaxy S24 lineup, which will arrive early next year.

One of the significant features of Samsung's execution will be to run some parts of the Gauss generative AI model locally on the device. This means the machine will not rely on an internet connection to accomplish specific tasks. The company states that it will integrate generative AI into the "core functions" of the device starting next year. This indicates that the company will debut the technology by launching its flagship Galaxy S24 series.

Named after the prominent mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss, the platform will include Samsung Gauss Code, Samsung Gauss Language, and Samsung Gauss Image. Samsung Gauss Language will allow users to summarize documents, compose emails, and translate. Samsung Gauss Code will potentially act as an assistant for coding purposes, and Samsung Gauss Image will be able to generate and edit images on command.

If Samsung pulls it through, the Gauss generative AI model will be a vital addition to the Galaxy S24 lineup. Furthermore, the ability to perform tasks locally would be quite a mark on its own compared to the competition. In comparison, Apple would be a little late to bring the features to the iPhone, even after considering an on-time release. Unlike OpenAI, Samsung is not "aiming to be such a heavy service," according to Miyoung Yoo, vice president of Samsung Electronics.

At this stage, Samsung is using Gauss generative AI technology internally for employee productivity, and it could finally hit the end user early next year. Gauss could be the Galaxy S24's key-selling feature, as it would enhance user productivity by facilitating various tasks. Note that this will only be the start for Samsung, and with time, the company will potentially add more features to the mix and expand the system as a whole.
