OneXPlayer becomes the third handheld manufacturer to bring an AMD Strix Halo-based gaming handheld, featuring the flagship 16-core/32-thread Zen 5 APU.
OneXPlayer Showcases OneXfly Apex Handheld, Featuring Ryzen AI Max+ 395, 8-Inch Display, Adjustable Triggers and More
Since a few handheld manufacturers have already started prepping their first Strix Halo-based gaming handhelds, others are joining as well. OneXPlayer, which was probably the first handheld maker to introduce Strix Point chips into mainstream handhelds, has just announced its latest flagship offering called OneXfly APEX. In an X post, the company teased its fastest gaming handheld, which will feature the flagship Strix Halo chip.
As mentioned in the post, the OneXfly Apex will be powered by a Zen 5-based Ryzen AI Max+ 395 processor, which offers 16x Zen 5 cores and 32 threads, offering the leading performance in the handheld segment. The processor features the fastest integrated graphics, i.e., Radeon 8060S, which offers 40 Compute Units based on RDNA 3.5 architecture. OneXPlayer has been offering the most versatile options in gaming handhelds, and it doesn't surprise us that it is finally debuting a Strix Halo-powered handheld, but unfortunately, it's the third company to do so.
Currently, only GPD has officially launched the first Strix Halo-based WIN 5 gaming handheld, and OneXPlayer may become the second to launch its first competitor even before AYANEO's offering. It seems that OneXPlayer wants to unlock the maximum possible gaming performance on OneXfly APEX, as the OneXFly APEX can boost up to 120W, which is Ryzen AI Max+ 395's power limit. To facilitate such a high boost in power, OneXPlayer says it has deployed "Silent Liquid Cooling" inside the chassis, which is uncommon in gaming handhelds.
Previously, AYANEO introduced its Vapor Chamber liquid cooling system for its handhelds, which is usually utilized in premium gaming laptops, but this could become a reality in modern gaming handhelds as well. We don't know the exact nature of the liquid cooling in the OneXfly APEX, but it will make it stand out in the crowd. The APEX, thankfully, offers a traditional handheld layout, featuring an 8-inch display that runs at 120Hz and also offers VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) support.
Its control system includes a traditional layout, featuring ABXY face buttons, two joysticks, a D-Pad, and adjustable multi-stage triggers as well, which means we are going to see both analog and micro switch trigger functionality. For storage, it will support mini SSD, but not much has been shared in detail when it comes to other specs. It will be interesting to know how long its battery life will be. We don't know if it will have a detachable battery like the GPD WIN 5 or not, but that's something we will know in the coming days.
Update: OneXfly APEX reportedly offers an 85Wh removable battery.
