Apple is gearing up to introduce its artificial intelligence features but does not plan to release finished products. The latest report from one of the most credible analysts suggests that AI features in iOS 18 will be available as beta previews, which gives us glimpses of Apple's struggle in the field. The platform will encompass various other changes, including visual enhancements and extended customizations for existing features.
AI features in iOS 18 could be released as beta previews, which means Apple is still lagging behind the competition
Mark Gurman, in his latest Power On newsletter, claims that iOS 18 will debut AI features as beta previews for all iPhone users. The 'beta' or 'preview' designation given to the upgrades means that the company is possibly not ready for the final release. However, this could bode well for the company as the race to introduce new AI features in the industry has caused an uproar, especially with the rollout of the AI Overviews in Google Search.
Apple could opt to use a dual approach with iOS 18 as it aims to offer half of the utilities that work using on-device processing while the other half would be sent to Apple's cloud-based infrastructure for processing. The code in the operating system would define if the task can be processed on the device or if it should be sent to Apple's servers. The report also claims that AI features will be handled on-device by newer devices launched this year or the previous.
Apple's approach to launching 'beta' or 'preview' AI features could mean that the final builds will be released in the future when the technology and its attributes are ready. However, it could also mean that the new artificial intelligence-based utilities will arrive as a beta for developers. If this is the case, then we could see the final release of iOS 18 with finished features, but these are mere speculations at this stage. We have also reported that iOS 18 could support an AI chatbot powered by ChatGPT, but no official confirmations are available at this stage.
