GPD Releases Win 5 Gaming Handheld, Boasting a 7-inch Display, Detachable External Battery, and The Power of Flagship Strix Halo APU; Expected to Carry a Sub-$2000 Price Tag

GPD becomes the first handheld manufacturer to actually release a gaming handheld with one of the fastest APUs on the planet. The GPD Win 5 has been officially launched, featuring the Ryzen AI Max+ 395 processor with a 55-75W TDP range, which boasts 16x Zen 5 cores and the fastest iGPU called Radeon 8060S. With such a monster APU, it's now the "Most Powerful" gaming handheld in the world, which is obvious since no iGPU can outperform the Radeon 8060S at the moment.

The iGPU brings a whopping 40 Compute Units based on RDNA 3.5, much higher than the iGPUs on existing handhelds, which are based on either Strix Point or custom Ryzen Z2 Extreme APUs. GPD says that the WIN 5 is the only handheld to bring support for up to 128 GB LPDDR5X 8000 MT/s memory and up to 4 TB SSD capacity, apart from the strongest APU. Various configurations are offered with the handheld, bringing 32 GB and 64 GB memory capacity, and 1/2/4 TB of storage options. Plus, there is a Micro SD card slot and a mini SSD card slot as well.

The display is a 7-inch IPS screen, boasting 1920x1080p resolution and up to 120Hz refresh rate for fluid gameplay. It is equipped with the AMD FreeSync Premium for eliminating screen tearing and also brings a decent 100% sRGB color space. The size of the handheld is neither too big nor too small, but despite bringing much superior hardware, it's smaller than most handhelds, including the Deck, measuring just 267mm in length.

We have also seen that unlike other handhelds, the WIN 5 has a detachable 80Wh battery pack, without which, the handheld weighs 565 grams. With the battery, the handheld becomes somewhat heavier, weighing 915 grams. It's also the only handheld that adopts the 180W AI PC power adapter, which is another way of powering the handheld, but will require a power outlet for continuous operation. So, users can choose either way of using the handheld based on their preferences and convenience.

GPD WIN 5 brings a modern control system, including capacitive joysticks for eSports FPS gaming and offers Zero Dead Zone and Zero Drift for a longer life. The handheld utilizes Hall Effect technology for its triggers, which also offer a hair trigger mode with 0.1mm accuracy and 0.1 ms of response time. For connectivity, WiFi 6E, and Bluetooth 5.3 are available for wireless connection, and there are 2x Type-C ports for peripheral connectivity (1x USB 3.2 Gen 2, 1x USB 4.0) and a 3.5mm Audio jack for a headset.

As far as the performance goes, the GPD WIN 5 reportedly brings superior performance to many high-end mainstream desktop processors for a much lower TDP and also higher scores than the NVIDIA RTX 4060 Mobile in synthetic benchmarks. Pricing-wise, GPD indicated that the handheld will be much lower in cost than the ASUS ROG Z13 Flow 2025, which costs $2299. This means, the GPD WIN 5 could list at a sub-$2000 price tag.
