GPD's Win 5 will be the first gaming handheld to feature AMD's top-of-the-line Ryzen AI MAX+ 395 "Strix Halo" APU, delivering near RTX 4060 performance.
GPD Win 5 Benchmarked in Various Applications and Games; AMD Ryzen AI MAX+ 395 "Strix Halo" In 70W Delivers Roughly RTX 4060-Equivalent Performance
The upcoming GPD Win 5 gaming handheld is already one of the most popular gaming handhelds due to being one of the first to bring the Strix Halo onboard. Unlike most gaming handheld manufacturers, GPD went with the AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395, which is the flagship 16-core/32-thread Zen 5 CPU that offers the leading iGPU performance, thanks to the flagship Radeon 8060S.
The Radeon 8060S has already been tested on various machines and has shown competitive performance when compared to budget graphics cards such as the GeForce RTX 4060, and it looks like the GPD Win 5 isn't that behind either. Despite being limited to a 70W max TDP, the Ryzen AI Max+ 395 seems to deliver performance close to an RTX 4060 as demonstrated by Jobs_Bao & PureDIY at Bilibili.
The CPU was benchmarked across various apps like Cinebench R23, 3DMark tests such as FireStrike and Time Spy, and delivered impressive performance. In CPU-Z, the chip scored 771 points in single-core and 12,678 points in multi-core tests. In Cinebench R23, the 16 Zen 5 cores scored 30,495 points.
In Time Spy Graphics, the Radeon 8060S scored a good 9,680 points, which is around 15% lower than the RTX 4060's score of 11413. While at full power, the Radeon 8060S delivers roughly the same performance as the RTX 4060, the 70W cap is still allowing the iGPU to reach a decent performance level, which will be enough to play modern titles at 1080p with ultra settings.
PureDIY showcased how the GPD Win 5 was able to achieve over 80 FPS in Black Myth: Wukong. The handheld does run hot at full load, as tested by these reviewers, and you can expect 70-80 Degrees Celsius on gaming. It's expected to see such heat generation due to a small chassis and limitations in the cooling solution deployed at such a small level. But remember that AYANEO has announced NEXT 2 with a much more powerful dual-fan configuration.
Moreover, it's going to bring a built-in capacity, which, in the case of GPD Win 5, needs to be attached from the outside. The battery pack can be connected to the back with ease and comes with a 5170mAh capacity. It does make the handheld very bulky, but it's convenient for those who want longer-lasting battery timings while gaming. The power adapter is a 180W design.
The back of the handheld also features two massive blower fans, which vent air out of the chassis. The large exhaust on the back will become blocked when the battery pack is attached, but there are additional vents on the top and bottom, which can channel air out of the chassis. It uses a 7-inch 120Hz panel and weighs 570 grams. The battery pack adds 340 grams to the weight.
There's also a docking station that comes with the handheld, offering a USB Type-C port, HDMI, three USB Type-A ports, and an Ethernet port.
At launch, the GPD Win 5 will be available in two configurations. The one with the AMD Ryzen AI MAX+ 395 with a starting memory capacity of 64 GB, and a Ryzen AI MAX 385 variant with a lower price tag. Nonetheless, it's going to be interesting to see how far the NEXT 2 can go in terms of performance, and hopefully, the TDP range is higher than the GPD Win 5.
