Google has started emailing its Google One subscribers that the company is getting rid of its VPN service for good later this year. Although it is sad news, there is very little surprise to the whole situation because the Mountain View company is famous for doing just that. At this point, it has become a norm.
The beloved Google One VPN is dying later this year because not enough people are using it
For those who don't know, Google launched its VPN service back in 2020, and it was actually bundled with the 2TB+ Google One plans. Over the years, several improvements were made to the VPN as the company started rolling it out to more markets. In addition to that, the company also introduced the VPN in more affordable plans. Although the use case was limited, the idea of having a VPN at your disposal—that too, a free and reliable one—was always a good thing.
So, why is Google killing its VPN service if it were perfectly capable of doing everything that you would want a VPN service to do? Well, the reason behind that, at least the one that the company has cited, is that there are simply not enough people using the service, and in such situations, it makes more sense just to close the service. The date has not been announced, but the email that people are receiving states that the Google One VPN is going to go away later this year.
The only silver lining here is that Google is still going to keep the Pixel VPN, which is available on the Pixel 8 series and will also make its way to older devices. So, if you are sad about Google One's VPN going away, at least you will have something to look forward to if you are on a Pixel device. As far as the Google One VPN is concerned, it surely will be missed by people who are actively using it. I hope that the company comes out with something that can replace it.
