Gigabyte has just set the newest AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPU frequency world record with its X870 AORUS Tachyon motherboard.

AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPU Finally Breaks Past 7.3 GHz In Record Overclock On Gigabyte's X870 AORUS Tachyon Motherboard

During a recent product launch event held in Shanghai, China, Gigabyte's in-house overclocker, Hicookie from Taiwan, achieved the frequency world record for the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPU using the company's top overclocking motherboard, the X870 AORUS Tachyon.

The AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D is already the fastest gaming CPU on the planet, achieving record gaming performance with its 2nd Gen 3D V-Cache. The chip features 8 cores and 16 threads, operating at up to 5.2 GHz clock speeds with 96 MB of cache and a 120W TDP. The chip was overclocked under LN2 cooling and reached a staggering frequency of 7313 MHz or 7.31 GHz, the first to break past the 7.3 GHz barrier, as the previous record title holder was around 7.2 GHz.

To achieve this record overclocking figure, the CPU had SMT disabled, and 8 cores and 8 threads were running. The chip was then overvolted with 1.631V, and a bus speed of 101.57 MHz was combined with a multiplier of 72. This was all made possible using the Gigabyte X870 AORUS Tachyon, an insanely high-end motherboard that is designed purely for overclockers. The motherboard also features a dual DIMM DDR5 design and was

The overclocker also proceeded to test out the record frequency and how well it held up in Cinebench 2024. As a result, Hicookie was able to score 1733 points in the single-core test with the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, though the CPU only managed to achieve a frequency of 6648.8 MHz, which is lower than the record OC figure but still a respectable overclock. This puts the result at the highest single-core OC score achieved by the 9800X3D CPU so far.

For comparison, an AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D with PBO enabled scores 1339 points, as per our own testing. This marks a 29.5% uplift for a 25.5% clock uplift. This is really impressive from Gigabyte and Hicookie, & with newer refreshes of the AM5 socket coming down the road, we can expect even better numbers in the near future.
