DRAM Prices Expected To Soar As Memory Makers Priortize Server DDR5 Over PC Memory

PC DRAM prices are forecasted to soar even further as major DRAM makers shift their focus to increasing the production of server DDR5 RAM.

Major DRAM Makers Prioritize Server DRAM and HBM Production, Impacting the PC DRAM Prices; Both DDR4 and DDR5 DRAM are Expected to See Price Surge

Looks like the DDR5 RAM prices will further increase in the coming months as major DRAM manufacturers have shifted their focus to supplying more DRAM chips to their customers in the server segment. Trend Force forecasted that the three giant DRAM makers, Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron, are prioritizing the server DRAM and HBM production, which will squeeze the supply of PC, mobile, and consumer DRAM. The news comes out a day after Samsung was reported to bump DRAM / NAND prices by up to 30%.

Due to the imbalance in supply, the DRAM prices are rising noticeably, including older DRAMs such as DDR4, LPDDR4X, and new ones such as DDR5, LPDDR5X, and GDDR7 as well. Trend Force predicts that the conventional DRAM prices will increase by 8-13% quarter-over-quarter in Q4 2025. However, if we include the HBM (High Bandwidth Memory), it goes as high as 13-18%.

Another major reason for higher memory prices is declining PC sales in Q4 2025, as OEMs are buying less DRAM due to a weak demand at the moment. Since DRAM makers are already focused on servers, the PC DDR4 and DDR5 memory are getting less attention. On the other hand, the cloud service providers (CSPs) in the US and in other parts of the world are ramping up their server builds, gaining the attention of major memory makers. Some CSPs are expected to start buying the DRAM early in Q4 this year instead of waiting until next year.

There is also some uncertainty as DRAM suppliers may focus their shift on HBM4 in the first half of 2026, instead of DDR5, further squeezing the supply of PC DRAM chips. That said, mobile DRAM will also be affected by this supply imbalance, and both LPDDR4X and LPDDR5X are forecasted to see a significant price increase. LPDDR4X price is expected to surge by 10% QoQ in Q4 2025, but it's not clear how much of an impact LPDDR5X will have to bear.

The GDDR7 and GDDR6 are expected to be affected as well. Both are utilized in the current-gen GPUs, such as the RTX 6000 and GeForce RTX 50 series, which utilize the GDDR7, and the AMD Radeon RX 7000 series, which is still using the older GDDR6 memory. The supply for GDDR6 is said to be tighter than GDDR7, and therefore, the prices are expected to rise even faster than GDDR7.
