It seems like China's chip industry is moving pretty rapidly when it comes to production capacity, as it is now set to overthrow the "presumed" leaders, South Korea and Taiwan.
Report Suggests That China's Chip Industry Is On-Track To Overtake Global Leaders In Production
There's a global race for chip production supremacy, whether it comes to process technology or the capacity of chips being produced by the nation. With President Trump taking over the White House, the U.S. has seen a drastic shift in focus towards domestic production capabilities, however, behind the scenes, China is said to be rapidly growing its foundry output, as according to a report by the Yole Group (via ETNews), it is claimed that Beijing currently ranks third when it comes to foundry production capacity, getting beaten by South Korea and Taiwan.
The more important point to note here is that Yole Group estimates that China is rapidly increasing production capacity, and that the nation is on track to take the lead in chip production capacity by 2030, showing that Chinese foundries are quickly scaling up production lines. Now, in terms of process technology, China is around five to ten years behind the world, since the state-backed SMIC is said to have successfully taped out 6nm, and efforts are ongoing towards processes like 5nm and beyond.
Since the US started the semiconductor trade war, China has been accelerating the establishment of an independent ecosystem. China is rapidly emerging as a central country in the foundry market.

China's production capacity is an effort towards self-reliance, and while the country is currently confined to mature nodes, it does show that China is eying increasing its influence over global semiconductor markets. ASML's CEO previously stated that the EU is dependent on mature nodes coming in from China, and that with US export controls, Europe's automotive sector and other areas are facing issues sourcing essential semiconductors.
China's chip production capacity is said to reach up to 30% of the global foundry market by 2030, surpassing the current industry leaders, South Korea and Taiwan. Moreover, with rapid advancements in semiconductor technology, it won't be long before we see Beijing racing with the world for node supremacy.
