As Google Prepares Assistant with Bard, ChatGPT is Looking to Replace Google Assistant on Android Phones

2023 was all about generative AI, and we are going to see the same trend this year, only much more spread out across various devices. ChatGPT made a massive impact on the tech world, and we saw several other chatbots like Copilot and Bard. Now, some new discoveries indicate that ChatGPT is looking to replace Google Assistant. This discovery was made just a few days after user interface pictures and videos of Assistant with Bard surfaced.

With ChatGPT looking to replace Assistant, the virtual assistant war could start any time

ChatGPT version 1.2023.352 now has a new activity called com.openai.voice.assistant.AssistantActivity. What's more interesting is that by default, this activity is disabled and requires enabling it manually. Once you enable it, the app can start drawing over other apps, something similar to how Google Assistant works. This means that soon, you might be able to talk to this AI chatbot by simply performing a gesture or action, and if that does happen, it could end up replacing Assistant altogether.

Now, before you go ahead and start trying it, you have to understand that at the time of writing, the ChatGPT feature does not work, and the activity closes before you even have the option to speak. This is nothing new, as it could indicate that the feature is still in development.

You can check in the video above how the feature is not quite ready. However, if OpenAI decides to bring ChatGPT right at the tip of our fingers, I would be worried about Assistant. Now, Google does understand that this is a threat, and therefore, the company is actively working on developing Assistant with Bard, but we do not have a concrete release date for that. We do know that 2024 is going to be all about a lot of advancements in AI as more and more phones are coming with on-device generative AI, it only makes sense for Google, OpenAI, and all the other companies to switch their focus and start working on bringing new and improved technologies to our smartphones.

We will keep an eye on further developments that ChatGPT goes through, and if this feature does end up becoming permanent, we will let you know. So be sure that you stay tuned for this and let us know what you would like to see next in the world of generative AI.
