At its earnings call in September, the iPhone reported a record-breaking quarter. Despite increasing sales, the iPhone has a declining average sales price in the United States. This is not the first time the iPhone has seen a downward trajectory in terms of the average sales price. This is the second consecutive quarter for the company. Android smartphones already feature a lower average sales price compared to the iPhone. For in-depth details, check out how the iPhone has performed in the past few months and recent years.
The iPhone 15 Pro's average selling price dropped in the last two consecutive quarters, equivalent to the company's performance from 2021
CIRP shared the data on its Substack titled "iPhone Sales Mix Continues to Push Average Retail Price Down." Other than the average selling price, the research firm also took note of the weighted average retail price of the iPhone in the United States. However, the entire spectrum of the research does not include the wholesale discounts Apple is giving retailers. However, the metric reveals the iPhone's different models and storage variants that the end user is considering.
As per the research, CIRP's data reveals that the weighted average retail price of the iPhone maxed out at $988 in the United States in the March quarter of 2023. Ever since, the weighted average price has declined for two successive quarters. The price dropped by $40 in June and faced another drop of $30 in September. The performance of the iPhone is relatively low compared to the previous year.
The current average retail price of the iPhone in the United States is $918, which dropped to match the iPhone's performance from 2021 to 2022. The change in the average price is due to older iPhone models. The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are selling, as well as the iPhone 14 Pro models. However, the iPhone 14 Pro models did worse than its predecessor, the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max.
The major shift was in the sales of the retiring, year-old flagship phones in this quarter, when their successors came on the market. Sales of iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max models at a combined 23% were down from the 37% that iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max models sold in the year-ago quarter.
While the average sales price of the iPhone has been low in the last two quarters, how the iPhone 15 lineup performs in the holiday season remains to be seen. This could give the lineup a significant boost in terms of sales, thereby deducing a new equilibrium of the average sales price. However, these are mere speculations at this stage, and there are chances that the devices will undergo a further decline in the following quarter.
