At the beginning of this month, ASUS announced an official deal with Intel, taking over the ownership and responsibility for Intel's NUC (Next Unit of Computing). This means ASUS should only manufacture and market Intel NUC systems based on 10th to 13th generation processors (and even future CPUs), but surprisingly, ASUS has just announced its first AMD-based NUC mini PC, which is unusual given the Intel-based heritage of the NUC line.

Nonetheless, the ROG NUC 9 Mini PC is the first-ever Ryzen-based system that comes with AMD's flagship Ryzen 9000 mobile processor, aka Ryzen 9 9955HX3D. The CPU brings a 16-core/32-thread Zen 5-based configuration and features 128 MB of L3 cache for improved gaming performance. It's going to be paired with NVIDIA's GeForce RTX 5070 laptop GPU, and currently, this is the only GPU option the ROG NUC 9 is offering. The Intel-based NUC mini PCs come with a variety of CPUs as well as GPUs, including RTX 5060, RTX 5070 series, and RTX 5080.

The ROG NUC 9 will feature 32 GB DDR5 RAM (SO-DIMM) clocked at 5600 MT/s. So, a bit slow here in contrast with Intel systems, which offer 6400 MT/s DDR5 memory. For storage, the machine features 2x M.2 slots (1x Gen 4 and 1x Gen 5) and ships with 1 TB of storage by default. However, users can upgrade both RAM (up to 96 GB) and storage according to their requirements. Connectivity includes WiFi 7, Bluetooth 5.4, and a decent 2.5G Ethernet port. Since it's a mini PC, it is quite compact, measuring just 282.4mm x 187.7mm x 56.5mm.

For cooling, the ROG NUC 9 will have a dual-fan configuration, and the case will be ventilated from the sides. For peripheral connectivity, users can find regular USB Type A ports, USB Type C ports in the front, while at the rear, modern options such as USB4 are also available, along with display outputs such as HDMI 2.1 and DP 2.1.

The ASUS ROG NUC 9 has been launched in China for 14,999 Yuan on JD, which translates to around US$2,100, but the regular price will be 15,999 Yuan or US$2244.
