AMD Confirms Ryzen 7040 Phoenix CPU Delay, First Laptops Expected In Next Several Weeks

AMD has confirmed the delay of its Ryzen 7040 Phoenix CPU and the respective laptops and will now be hitting retail in the next several weeks.

AMD Ryzen 7040 Phoenix CPUs Delayed, Company States Availability Expected Within "Next Several Weeks"

Last week, we reported that AMD's Ryzen 7040 "Phoenix" CPUs had missed their launch schedule. The first laptops featuring these new chips were initially planned for launch in March but AMD had to push back the retail release to April, citing that they want to align with platform readiness and to ensure the best possible experience to its users. Now, we are in May & while we have seen various product announcements, not one laptop has been made available officially.

Following our report, it looks like AMD has shed some additional light on the launch plan of its Ryzen 7040 Phoenix CPUs and the products it will power. Following what a company rep had to say to Tomshardware regarding the delay:

We did start to ramp production of those Ryzen 7040 Series [chips]. Our OEM partners have started shipping those systems. Largely, the 7040HS systems. So those should hit etail and retail over the next several weeks. We started shipping last quarter, and those systems should be available in the next several weeks.

AMD Representative

So if we go by AMD's word, it looks like the OEMs have already shipped the Ryzen 7040 CPUs in Q1 2023 and the OEMs started shipping their respective systems, mostly laptops now. If OEMs started shipping the first systems in May and AMD is anticipating availability during the next several weeks, we can realistically expect proper channel availability by the end of May with some systems around mid of May but in limited quantities.

The vast majority of the products announced around Phoenix CPUs are handheld gaming consoles from ASUS, AOKZOE, GPDWIN, and Ayaneo. Besides those, a large variety of Mini PCs hosting the same chips are also expected to launch in May.

A single ASUS laptop featuring the AMD Ryzen 9 7940HS has been available but only at limited retailers. It is likely these retailers were the first to receive shipments of Ryzen 7040 laptops and were given the green light to proceed with sales. The laptop costs $1599.99 US while featuring an NVIDIA GeForce RT 4060 8 GB GPU, 512 GB NVMe SSD and 16 GB of DDR5 memory. This pricing is slightly on the high side compared to Chinese pre-order listings which have laptops starting close to $1000 US.

There is vast majority of users who have been waiting to get hands-on AMD Phoenix APU-powered laptops for a while now. Not only do these laptops offer amazing performance and efficiency but it also provides one of the best-integrated graphics solutions which can be a game-changer for users who are looking to buy a budget gaming laptop.
