The telecommunication service providers are bringing about major changes in order to stay relevant and competitive. This is especially the case with the top three carriers in the U.S.: Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile. Along with many sectors adopting deeper AI integrations and focusing on automation, the telecom sector seems to be heavily focusing on it too. The trend of laying off staff members and cutting down the workforce is also reaching the carriers, as AT&T is also planning to lay off many of its staff members in Alabama.

AT&T is set to lay off about 70 of its employees in Alabama, with the plan to take effect on September 20

There seems to be a broader industry trend towards automation and undergoing digital transformation, with a greater adoption of AI. While AT&T has not explicitly stated the technology to be a major reason for its plan to cut down multiple jobs, but given how generally this is the main driving force behind job displacement, it does make us question if the acceleration towards AI is also the driving force behind this change.

As per the Montgomery Advertiser, AT&T plans to lay off about 70 of its employees working in Huntsville, Alabama, and this news is further backed up by the Alabama Department of Commerce. The buzz has been around AT&T moving in this direction after the company filed for Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notice last week. A formal way of going about large job cuts wherein you give a notice 60 days prior to shutting down a facility or carrying out layoffs that impact 50 or more employees.

The document suggests that the layoff would be effective on September 20th, around the same time we are expecting the iPhone 17 to come out. An AT&T spokesperson while talking to the Montgomery Advertiser explained how they would go about this rather difficult decision.

Reducing our workforce is a difficult decision that we don't take lightly. We make every effort to do this through attrition, voluntary departures, and re-skilling efforts, but there are times like this when additional reductions are necessary. For eligible employees affected by these changes, we will provide severance pay, benefits and outplacement services.

The telecom industry seems to be facing growing pressure to innovate and achieve greater efficiency, even if it comes at the cost of human jobs. With AT&T embracing automation, we see an increasing number of jobs being displaced even if the companies do not clearly state the reason behind shifting trends.
