Windows 10 on Snapdragon SoCs Coming Soon Says Microsoft – Battery Is Going to Be a Huge Selling Point
Windows 10 Mobile might not receive the development love that it rightfully deserves but it looks like there is a silver lining in all of this. Microsoft has been working at a frantic pace to make sure that its Windows 10 operating system can work fluidly on Snapdragon chipsets. According to the company, Windows 10 on Qualcomm chipsets are in the final stages of development and will be arriving soon, with a lot of perks being laid out at the same time.
Microsoft Claims Battery Life Is Going to Be ‘Game-Changer’ on ARM-Powered Windows 10 Notebooks – Software Suite Will Continue to Grow With Time
Though a Snapdragon 835 will be the minimum required chipset to run a desktop version of Windows 10, it was demonstrated last year that Photoshop is more than capable of running on a Snapdragon 820. Now, according to Pete Bernard, the group program manager for Windows at Microsoft stated that both companies are going to bring the worlds of PC and mobile into one platform.
“The PC space and the phone space have been sort of in parallel universes for a couple of decades … what two better companies to bring those worlds together than Microsoft and Qualcomm. We’ve been working furiously in Redmond and with our partners in San Diego on this thing. We have hundreds of these devices now being used on a daily basis … we’re getting pretty far along in the development process.”
Coming to the battery life of ARM-powered Windows 10 notebooks, there is actually a funny story behind this, which has been stated below, courtesy of Bernard.
“One of the funny anecdotes is we handed out these devices to all of our dev directors and leaders across the windows org, and we started getting all these bug reports back … saying ‘the battery meter’s not working, it says I still have a full charge. It turned out not to be a bug; it just has a great battery life. So people are getting used to this concept of having a device that you don’t have to charge, and at the same time people are getting used to this notion of being always connected and having a device with that LTE connectivity built in.”
So just by accident, it was found out that Windows 10 notebooks exhibit terrific battery life and this is the difference when you have a notebook processor and mobile SoC running inside a machine like this.
Qualcomm is actually working with several partners ranging from HP, ASUS, Lenovo and others to bring ARM-powered notebooks into existence and with the final development stages already underway, it will not be long till we can see the perks of owning these laptops.
