During their surprisingly-packed Paris Games Week 2017 presentation, Sony dropped an all-new Spider-Man trailer, which provided a first glimpse at Peter Parker without his mask and a variety of other classic characters. It was great to see favorites like Mary Jane Watson, Miles Morales, and Aunt May will be part of the story, but developer Insomniac Games is going a step further. Turns out at least one of these supporting characters will actually be playable.

In a recent interview with IGN, Spider-Man creative director Bryan Intihar confirmed Mary Jane (who’s given up acting for a reporter job in Insomniac’s universe) will be playable in the game.

“You actually play, at various stages of the game, as Mary-Jane. It’s a very different experience to playing as Spider-Man. It stays true to her character, in terms of her background that she’s a reporter for the Daily Bugle. I really like her role in the game, and to put her in a role that maybe we haven’t seen as much. It’s less of a damsel in distress, she’s much more of a capable contributor, a risk-taker in this game.”

Insomniac refused to comment on whether Miles Morales would also be playable, but come on, he totally has to be. Now that we’ve established there are non-Peter Parker playable characters, it would be downright weird to keep teasing Miles Morales and have him be a mere NPC.

In the another interview, Intihar touched on Spider-Man’s gameplay. He re-confirmed the game will be open-world, but don’t expect a lot of focus on character-building – Spider-Man will have pretty much all his powers right from the get-go

“It’s not like you load up the game and he doesn’t have any powers. The first time you’re swinging, the first time you’re fighting, you need to feel like Spider-Man. It’s not about doing something cool, stripping your powers and starting again from scratch. You play Spider-Man to be Spider-Man, and we want you to feel like that right away.”

I usually don’t mind the Metroid approach, but I think giving Spidey all his powers right away is the smart choice. Nobody wants to play as a less-than-super version of a superhero.

Spider-Man swings onto PS4 in early 2018.
