Samsung Boss Lee Jae-yong Has Been Released From Jail On A Successful Appeal Following a Massive Corruption Case
The vice chairman of Samsung Electronics, Lee Jae-yong has been released from prison after a successful appeal. The executive was found guilty or perjury and had been sentenced to five years in prison. While the prison sentence for bribery has been suspended, the reversal of the decision does raise some eyebrows. Samsung heir had appealed his sentence which the court reduced to half, two and a half years on Monday. In addition to this, he will be on probation for four years as per the court. So let's dive in to see some more details on the matter.
Samsung Heir Lee Jae-yong Released From Prison With Reduced Sentence
Lee's sentence to five years of prison time lead to the removal of the former South Korean President Park Geun-hye the year before. Apart from reducing the prison sentence to half, Lee is free to go with four years of probation. However, he has been confined for a year at this stage, as per Bloomberg.
Lee Jae-yong is the son of Lee Kun-hee, chairman of the Samsung Group. He is also presumed to be the heir to the chairman position. However, he does not have a right to take the position until Lee Kun-hee passes away. So he can not just walk in and embark on the position of his father. In addition to this, Lee Kun-hee was also charged with tax evasion and bribery.
However, as we have mentioned earlier, the court's decision to reduce half of the prison sentence does not set a good example. Samsung's is yet to launch its upcoming flagship of the year 2018. As per leaks and rumors, the device is said to be all about the camera. It does not plainly mean that there will be no new additions other than the photo-taking abilities of the device.
