Vampire: The Masquerade – Swansong is a narrative RPG that lets you play as three vampires, Emem, Galeb, and Leysha, dealing with mysteries and conspiracies that will determine their fate as well as the one of the entire city of Boston. Every single choice has significant consequences on the story, so each decision must be taken very seriously.
Each character has their own abilities to develop (called Skills, Disciplines, and Attributes), which are useful to progress in the game and unlock new options that will come in handy during exploration and dialogues. But Vampire: The Masquerade – Swansong is not just that: there are many other aspects to keep in mind when playing, so here you will find some valuable tips and tricks to help you know the game better.
Look Everywhere for Hints
Vampire: The Masquerade – Swansong has a solid investigative component and is full of subplots, so exploration plays a key role in the game. Clues are scattered throughout each game area and are essential to advance in the story. Some may be hidden inside drawers or safes (such as written notes) or simply revealed to you during interactions with other characters. Still, others are just visuals, so even paintings could hide the key to continuing the adventure.
Furthermore, the game does not present a summary of the clues found, so taking up pen and paper is the best choice not to miss anything.
Use your Abilities During Exploration
Disciplines are supernatural abilities that each vampire can use to their own advantage. They will be your best ally in Vampire: The Masquerade – Swansong because they can help you win dialogues and find hidden objects.
Auspex is the Discipline you will probably use the most during your journey because it enhances your five senses and can reveal new options, paths, and interactions. It can also help you sense the smell of an object and track its owner or show and interact with a previously hidden item. You could even experience premonitions using it and discover valuable plot details.
There are other Disciplines as well that can be only used with a specific character. Leveling them up will help you get the most out of your journey.
Talk to Every Single Character
All characters in Vampire: The Masquerade – Swansong have their own story and secrets, whether they are playable or not. During your adventure, you will find many humans and vampires to talk with: they can reveal important information for your mission that can be useful to unlock secret areas, progress the game, or solve intrigues. Do not miss any one of them: sometimes, you will get a detached reply, but most of the time, you will engage in a dialogue that will potentially provide significant plot details.
It is also important to know that there are no traditional fights in Vampire: The Masquerade – Swansong. Your main weapon is your rhetoric. You will confront other characters (and possibly win) using only words, powered up by your Skills, Disciplines, and Attributes.
Keep an Eye on your Hunger Level
Vampires need to feed themselves. The Hunger level of each playable character is shown on the top right angle of the screen and must be monitored closely. Using a Discipline generates Hunger, and the maximum level shall not be exceeded. Otherwise, the vampire may lose control and attack the nearest human, increasing Suspicion (which will negatively affect your adventure).
You can keep your Hunger levels under control in Vampire: The Masquerade – Swansong by hunting prey, escorting them to Safe Zones spread through the map and biting them. You can control the amount of blood you drink with a mini-game: simply press and hold the selected button, but keep in mind that the timing is essential, as you could kill them if you drink too much blood, increasing your Suspicion levels.
Recharge your Willpower
During dialogues, some choices may require the use of your Skills. This applies to some environmental interactions, as well. Each time you use them, you will consume one or more Willpower points. The amount of available Willpower is shown on the top left side of the screen. If it reaches 0, you won’t be able to use your Skills.
For this reason, it is essential to recharge your Willpower during each chapter of the game. You can do that by finding and using consumables: they can be photos, business cards, and other items. Depending on the outcome, Willpower can also be earned at the end of a dialogue.
