Fable Legends will probably be the first title to make use of Microsoft's new API
Fable Legends, just announced of being a free-to-play title, will probably be the first game to make use of Microsoft's new API. Add to that the incredibly amazing visual fidelity that can be achieved with the Unreal 4 engine, and you have quite an amazing combination. Back in September of last year, Nvidia demonstrated Fable Legends running on Maxwell architecture using DirectX 12, and it looked stunning. Maxwell was said to have been the first GPU to offer full support for DirectX 12, but AMD followed with a presentation of their own, claiming that GCN would offer full support for DX 12.
Given that the hardware in the Xbox One is based on GCN architecture as well, the same applies to the One as well. There have been some sources, that have suggested that Maxwell would actually be the first GPU to offer full hardware support, but in actuality only Microsoft, knows at this point the extend of which certain features of DirectX 12 would be supported or not, on already released hardware.
Regardless, both Nvidia and AMD, have new graphics cards coming around the summer, so full support for the new API will most likely be found in those GPUs. Fable Legends though, would be the perfect candidate for users to get a first taste of DirectX 12, as well as to marvel at some nice use of the Unreal 4 Engine.
Fable Legends, director, David Eckelberry, explained the free-to-play nature of the game:
“There are free-to-play games like World of Tanks out there that are very much a pay-to-win kind of experience,”
“For me the better ones for the customers are the ones where you get to enjoy all of the content without paying money. And then you pay if you want to. I want them to have such a fun experience that some percentage of them go, okay I’m going to buy a hero that just came out, or I’ll get a new hairstyle and a cool-looking hood.
“That’s the kind of feeling we want to generate in our players where, we’ve offered them such a good time that they’re spending time in it that they feel valuable.
Fable Legends will release for the Xbox One and Windows 10, sometime later this year, although no specific date has been given yet. There will very likely be some new information regarding the game at GDC, early next month, probably part of Microsoft’s DirectX 12 and Windows 10 presentation.
We will keep you informed of any news regarding Fable Legends, as well as DirectX 12, and we will have some nice coverage of the GDC event.
