…then again, we would like to think so as well. In the midst of all the hype and hoopla we are getting over Google Nexus One, iPhone 4.0 and then we ran a story on Microsoft preparing to launch Zune Phone. A story has hit the web and it is going to spread like wild fire.
While running through regular Zune software update, istartedsomething.com came across the drivers listing in the .inf file, stashed deep inside was the clear indication of what Microsoft is up to.
As you can see that there are three different devices listed for Zune Phone:
%Zune.DeviceDesc% = ZuneMTPZUSB, USBMS_COMP_MTPZ
%Zune.DeviceDesc% = ZuneMTPZUSB, USBVID_045E&PID_0710
%Zune.DeviceDesc% = ZuneMTPZUSB, USBVID_045E&PID_063E
%Phone.DeviceDesc% = ZuneMTPZUSB, USBVID_045E&PID_0640
%Phone.DeviceDesc% = ZuneMTPZUSB, USBVID_045E&PID_0641
%Phone.DeviceDesc% = ZuneMTPZUSB, USBVID_045E&PID_0642
%ZuneIp.DeviceDesc% = ZuneMTPZIP, umburn:microsoft-com:device:mtpz:1Advertisement
; Localizable strings
Msft = “Microsoft”
Zune.DeviceDesc = “Zune”
Phone.DeviceDesc = “Phone”
The drivers were dated back to November 2009, therefore indicating that phone launch was or is expected before the release of new drivers. It is also the possibility that these drivers are for the phones with Windows Mobile OS (Win7 maybe) but then again, why would it be tagged or written as phone and that too Zune Phone. There are too much speculations, rumors running around specially when Mobile World Congress 2010 is around the corner. Maybe Microsoft has a little surprise under its kitty after all. We would have to wait and see.
