Vampyr is one of the games I’m most interested in checking next year. French studio Dontnod Entertainment deserves attention after the innovative Life Is Strange and from what I’ve seen at Gamescom 2016, Vampyr is shaping up to be a unique kind of game. For example, while other titles don’t have any qualms pushing you to level up as much as possible, doing so in Vampyr will come at the very expense of your character’s remaining humanity.

The main character in Vampyr, Jonathan Reid, is a doctor practicing his craft in London at the time of the Spanish flu (1918). He gets turned to vampire, though, at which point his needs change quite a bit.

You can avoid killing innocent humans, but such a choice will also make your character a lot weaker than he would otherwise be since killing is by far the fastest way to level up in the game. Anyone in the game can be killed or spared, which puts player agency at the very center of Vampyr. According to Dontnod, this will dynamically change your relationship with certain NPCs and indeed, the whole story.

Powered by Epic’s Unreal Engine 4, Vampyr looks great already. The combat system also seems responsive and it will include a host of supernatural powers fueled by blood; having these will be quite important when Reid faces veteran vampire hunters and other supernatural creatures. According to the studio, the game will feature a “semi” open world environment with the ability to freely explore zones, while longevity is estimated at fifteen hours for the main quest and another fifteen for the secondary quests.

Publisher Focus Home Interactive and developer Dontnod Entertainment just released a new trailer called ‘Darkness Within’ in partnership with IGN First, once again exploring the striking duality of Reid’s nature as both doctor and vampire.
