Tesla CEO Elon Musk took center stage to unveil a range of textured glass tiles. While these didn’t look any different from regular rooftop tiles, Musk states that they will be near-indistinguishable, but they have been integrated with solar cells to encourage the use of clean energy of environment conservation.

Masking the Tesla Solar Cells Came From Using a Certain Set of Materials

Musk states that the secret to the appearance of these solar cell tiles was thanks to a special coating that will allow you to get a better visual of the tiles according to your viewing angle of that tile. While these are similar to the workings of a privacy screen of a laptop, if you’re on ground level and you are viewing the Tesla solar panel tiles, then it will be very difficult for you tell the difference between a regular solar panel and these ones.

If your viewing angles start to approach the 90-degree mark, then you’ll slowly be able to tell the difference, otherwise, even a discerning eye won’t be able to see the clever trick that Tesla has pulled off. Catered towards producing clean energy, the installation of these solar panels will help to reduce greenhouse gases, contributing to the environment as a result.

“The goal is…to make solar roofs that look better than a normal roof, generate electricity, last longer, have better insulation and an installed cost that is less than a normal roof plus the cost of electricity. We need to make solar panels as appealing as electric cars have become. It needs to be beautiful, affordable, and seamlessly integrated. If all of those things are true, why would you go any other direction?”

Though these solar panels definitely look appealing and will mask their true nature if you decide to attempt to distinguish between them and regular tiles, Musk did not care to provide the audience with important details ranging from pricing and availability. Hopefully, we’ll be updated about these soon enough. Musk did state that these provide better insulation and the installation costs of these solar panels will be less compared to that of a normal roof; these tiles could become a worthy addition for ordinary house owners.
