Star Wars: Battlefront to Run at 60fps on all Platforms, Aims for Photo-Realism
Following the reveal of Star Wars: Battlefront with the incredible Gameplay trailer, DICE Producer Craig McLeod, reports that Star Wars: Battlefront will run at 60fps on all three platforms, PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
“We’re making sure, first and foremost, to ensure it runs at 60 frames per second on everything because that’s what delivers the best gameplay experience.
McLeod further states that:
“When you couple the talent that we have in the office with the technology and new generation of consoles has allowed us to achieve, that’s how you can get these environments that you’re seeing which simply wasn’t possible before,”
Star Wars: Battlefront aims for photo-realism using photogrammetry and PBR
Star Wars : Battlefront does look unquestionably gorgeous and this is mainly because of two technologies, Physically Based Rendering (PBR) and photogrammetry. Using DICE’s Frostbite engine makes all of this possible. The team at DICE was invited into the Star Wars archives and using photogrammetry , has been able to faithfully recreate objects, materials and costumes as they appeared in the original Star Wars films. Photogrammetry is the process of photographing an object from all angles and using software to create an exact digital 3D model of the object.
DICE, using PBR managed to give the objects the real and physical properties of the simulated materials, that in addition to photogrammetry and the Frostbite engine has allowed the team to create photo-realistic graphics.
Given that DICE targets 60 FPS for Star Wars: Battlefront on all three platforms, and considering that the trailer was running at MSAA 8x with a high level of adaptive tesselation, it would seem quite impossible for DICE to attain 60 FPS at 1080p, especially on the Xbox One. Battlefield 4 used a native resolution of 900p on the PlayStation 4 and 720p on the Xbox One, in order to retain the 60 fPS target, although that was quite early in the life cycle of the consoles and the Frostbite engine could enable the team better results this time around.
