Snap Inc. created quite a buzz with its video-recording Spectacles, last year. Initially, these were only available through special pop-up vending machines. The company has finally made them available online for $129.99, in Coral, Black and Teal colour options clubbed with a charging cable and case. For now, the shipping duration for these Spectacles on the website is two to three weeks.

For now, Spectacles are up for online selling in the United States only through a dedicated website. Earlier, Snapchat was limiting the sale of Spectacles only through vending machines, and pop-up shops in the New York City. The company has now closed the pop-up stores and is also holding back the traveling vending machines. Although, the company did hint on “Snapbots” that will appear at “surprising” locations, soon. One user can buy up to six Spectacles when ordering online.

Snap Inc. had been planning on making this move for quite some time and it even mentioned the plan in its IPO statements that it will “significantly broaden the distribution of Spectacles”. One of the main reasons behind bringing Spectacles online is to make them popular again as the pop-up shops at NYC started to lose their charm after the buzz about the Spectacles started wearing off. TechCrunch points out the IPO statement of Snap, wherein Snap Inc. mentions – “The launch of Spectacles has as not generated significant revenue for us. We expect to experience production and operating costs related to Spectacles that will exceed the related revenue in the near future”.

Snap Spectacles are synced with the Snapchat app on smartphones, and a button on Spectacles can record ten-second videos, which gets saved in the “Memories” section of the app. The recorded video by Spectacles can also be shared as a Snap story by users. Even though the company is making them available for online purchase, the users can still expect vending machines to appear at popular locations.

Regarding the launch of Spectacles online, Snap’s spokesperson says:

“As Evan shared in his interview with the WSJ, when we launched, the idea was : ‘We’re going to take a slow approach to rolling them out,’ says Spiegel. ‘It’s about us figuring out if it fits into people’s lives and seeing how they like it.’ Response has been positive since November’s launch so we’re now happy to be able to make Spectacles more readily available — especially for those in the US who have not been able to make it to a Snapbot.”

Now that Spectacles are up for online selling in the US, we expect the company expand it to other regions. Would you be interested in giving it a try? Share your thoughts in the comment section below.
