Haswell Xeon E3 1200 V3 Front
Hardware

Haswell Server

Update Via Computerbase: Apparently ChinaDIY were mistaken. At least in the pictures shown it is not a “Haswell” sample. The number of pins is not 1156 and 1150th Moreover, the figures “CM80616003180AG” on the heatspreader on an older ”Clarkdale” chip (Core i3-530) out. That this does not fit into the new socket LGA1150 is therefore hardly surprising.

The Denlow platform for Intel’s upcoming Haswell and Broadwell workstation processors is expected to launch this year in June. The platform consists of the upcoming Haswell based Xeon E3-1200 V3 and later on Broadwell v4 chips in 2014.

Haswell Xeon E3-1200 V3 Fail in compatibility with LGA 1150 interface?

The Haswell Xeon E3-1200 V3 server lineup was leaked a few weeks ago consisting of 13 chips. These new Xeon E3-1200 V3 chips are based on the 22nm Haswell micro-architecture that features 3D transistors technology and was supposed to be compatible with the LGA 1150 socket just like the Haswell desktop lineup. However, ChinaDIY recently got samples of the upcoming Haswell Xeon E3-1200 V3 processors and when equipping the new chips on a Z87 retail motherboard, the chip didn’t fit in the socket.

Intel 4th Generation Haswell

Intel assured us last year that the company would keep LGA socket alive for a “foreseeable future” after rumors of them transitioning to BGA in the desktop market surfaced. Today, a leak from VR-Zone confirms that Intel is indeed working on not one but three Intel Haswell processors that would ship in BGA packages on the desktop platform and would include the Core i7-4770R leading the pack.

Intel Haswell R-series BGA CPUs Specs

The R naming scheme suggests the BGA packaged desktop processors which would presumably either become part of Intel’s upcoming NUC systems which are confirmed to feature Intel Haswell processor or a complete new desktop platform which is yet to be seen. The Intel Haswell LGA 1150 lineup remains as it is but looking at BGA CPUs this early is quiet intriguing. Currently, Intel ships their desktop CPUs in K (Unlocked), T (Low TDP) and S (Low Power) variants.

The new Intel Haswell R-Series lineup would include three BGA packaged CPUs which would include the following:

Intel Haswell

Model Cores /
Threads
CPU clock TurboBoost L3 cache          Graphics TDP
Core i7-4770R 4/8 3.2 GHz 3.9 GHz 6 MB HD 5200 GT3 (1300MHz) 65W
Core i7-4670R 4/4 3.0 GHz 3.7 GHz 4 MB HD 5200 GT3 (1300 MHz) 65W
Core i5-4570R 4/4 2.7 GHz 3.2 GHz 4 MB HD 5200 GT3 (1150 MHz) 65W

Intel Denlow Server Platform

The upcoming Intel Denlow Server platform for workstation and server users which launches in June 2013 has been detailed. From a previous article that was reported a few days ago, it should be noted that the platform would consist 13 Haswell E3-1200 V3 processors which can be seen here.

Intel Denlow Server Platform “Haswell E3-1200 V3″ Detailed

The Intel Denlow Server platform would make use of the “Haswell” Tock CPU which would deliver Integrated voltage regulation technology for a simplied power delivery system since the VRM modules are located on the chip itself rather than being on the motherboards, this in return means lower costs on the upcoming LGA 1150 motherboards. The Haswell “Denlow” chips would support 1600 MHz Dual channel memory, improved Debug utilities and offer upto 6 lanes of SATA 3 @ 6 GBps, USB 3.0 and a super speed bus rated at 5.0 Gbit/s. Memory could either be DDR3 or DDR3L for power conscious users.

The main focus on Intel Denlow Server platform would be its energy efficient design which may be noted from the Haswell core architecture. The CPU and PCH “Lynx Point” would come with improved idle state configurations while low voltage processors would ship with higher frequencies to deliver better performance in an efficient package.

Socketed CPUs

Xbitlabs, in their recent report have further confirmed that Intel won’t be discontinuing Socketed CPUs any time now. A few months ago, a roadmap was revealed by PCwatch which spread around the internet like wildfire, the roadmap revealed that Intel would discontinue their socketed CPUs in a bid to offer BGA packaged CPUs focused on mobile sector which would end the choice of upgrade on LGA platforms.

Intel Commited To Socketed CPUs Till Skylake 2016

Intel retracted the report and said that the company would keep offering Socketed CPUs for “Foreseeable Future”. AMD also revealed that their company would be committed to prepare socketed CPUs for PC Desktop and DIY users. However the future timeframe was later revealed to be very early starting from Intel’s Broadwell 14nm CPUs which arrive in 2014, however only Dual core models of Boradwell  CPUs were meant to be shipped in BGA package, the bulk of the lineup was still committed to socketed LGA setups and mobile parts shipping in uPGA packages.

But a few months earlier, TechReport confirmed that while Intel was planning an early switch to BGA packaged CPUs, the company revised their plans and planned on keeping Socketed CPUs for a while. Today, Xbitlabs solidifies their claim and re-assures the same thing that Intel would be commited to socketed CPUs for atleast their Skylake (14nm) generation of CPUs which would be based on a new architecture. So atleast its still a bunch of time atleast till Skylake after which Skymont generation of CPUs would get BGA  packaged CPUs, atleast that’s what we heard.

Core i7-4770K

Several listings of Intel’s upcoming Core i7-4770K CPU have appeared on Dutch retailer sites. The Core i7-4770K which is the flagship “Haswell” Fourth generation core processor will launch on June 2nd but looking at the listing so early is a bit weird.

Intel Core i7-4770K Listed and Available For Pre-Order

The price comes to an average of around €350.00 which is the same price at which the Core i7-3770K Ivy Bridge is currently retailing on the same sites. The retail cost of the Core i7-4770K would end up matching the same as the cost of a Core i7-3770K available these days at $329.99.

Intel’s Core i7-4770K is built on the 22nm 3D transistors technology and would be a Quad Core Core operating at 3.5 GHz base and 3.9 GHz Boost clock. The CPU would feature 8 MB L3 cache, HD 4600 (1250 MHz) series graphics and an unlocked design. The chip would have a rated TDP of 84W which is higher compared to 77W on Ivy bridge based Core i7-3770K. You can check out the complete Haswell desktop CPU lineup here. Furthermore, you can check out its performance results which were leaked a few days ago by TomsHardware over here.

Core i7-4770K

Intel would be releasing the latest 4th Generation Haswell Core processors on 2nd June 2013. Leading the pack on the desktop front would be the Quad Core Core i7-4770K which has today been previewed by TomsHardware.

We know almost everything about the Intel Haswell lineup since it was revealed in two multiple leaks which can be found here and here. As you can note, the lineup consists of 26 new desktop processor variants which would offer compatibility with the upcoming LGA 1150 socket motherboards. In addition to the desktop lineup, Intel would also launch their new Haswell Mobile CPUs which would consist of the flagship Core i7-4930MX and five other BGA/rPGA processors which can be seen here.

Intel Core i7-4770K Haswell Performance Previewed

Coming back to the Core i7-4770K, the flagship part would have 4 cores and 8 threads clocked at 3.5 GHz stock and 3.9 GHz max Turbo Boost 2.0 frequency. The CPU would ship with an 8 MB L3 cache, 84 W TDP and an GT2 level iGPU which would be clocked at 1250 MHz (1.25 GHz). Now here’s something to note though, that while Intel’s GT2 HD 4600 graphics would offer better performance over Ivy Bridge’s HD 4000 it still features 20 cores (Execution Units) compared to 40 Execution units on the GT3 chip which only ships with Quad Core mobile parts. Nevertheless, Toms has provided a brief preview on the GPU performance of the GT2 chip on the Core i7-4770K which would be seen in this article later.
