Thunder Lotus Games has released an amazing new Beta trailer for Jotun, titled “Through Cold & Darkness”, which can be watched below:

Jotun is an absolutely gorgeous hand-drawn action-exploration game set in Norse mythology

In Jotun, you play Thora, a Norse warrior who has died an inglorious death and must face the challenges of Viking purgatory to prove herself to the Gods and enter Valhalla.

Jotun‘s core loop revolves around collecting Runes to summon and fight the jotun, gigantic Norse elementals. The game focuses on the balance between atmospheric exploration and ferocious combat. Imagine the mysterious romantic mood of Journey mixed with the scale of the boss fights in Shadow of the Colossus in top-down 2D.

The combat in Jotun is fast-paced and brutally hard

Using only your massive two-handed axe, you take on foes that are hundreds of times your size. Every hit from a jotun’s attack will take out a huge chunk of your health.

A few words about the developer:

After quitting his job in January 2014, Will Dubé and friends brought Jotun to Kickstarter in July of the same year. Raising over $64,000 from 2,299 backers, Jotun was also Greenlit in under a week. The success of the Kickstarter campaign consolidated the team and the vision and allowed us to get additional funding from the Canadian Media Fund and the Montreal Inc Foundation. Jotun is now in full production and scheduled for release on Steam (Windows, Mac and Linux) in the fall of 2015.

“I’ve always been fascinated with centuries-old texts like Beowulf and The Divine Comedy. I think there’s something sacred and mystical within them. Pagan mythologies are just so rich, different and awesome. In high school, I studied Greek and Roman mythology a little bit. I always loved the crazy stories. Zeus getting pregnant in his thigh, Cronus eating his children. Things you just don’t read about in other kinds of literature. Norse mythology is just a small step away and once I started delving deeper into it, I knew it would be the perfect setting for our story.”

“Jotun’s gameplay is a love letter to classic games such as The Legend of Zelda. It has simple controls, action-packed boss fights and a mythic Viking world to discover. Jotun is not a “hack-and-slash” RPG. We prefer to avoid numbers and text when possible: there are no experience points and few stats. Like the Vikings, you must prove your valor to the Gods using only your wits and your skill in combat.”

Jotun has been getting high praise from many major publications such IGN, Gamespot, Kotaku and PC Gamer. It’s certainly one very special adventure, that should be experienced by all fans of beautiful hand drawn art, as well as from fans of Shadow of the Colossus. Jotun will release in September 2015 for the PC and on consoles at a later date. We will bring you any new information on Jotun as soon as it becomes available.
