Default Tips to protect your PC from Viruses

I had a very bad experience with Norton and AVG Anti Viruses when I used both of them after a few months gap for checking my PC for viruses. Both of them not only changed the extensions of infected files but both made the files unusable. So I was thinking if this is the solution these quite famous Anti-Viruses are providing & Why don't they simply say this file is infected n we can't repair it and so select "delete" these number of files.

(Note: I used legitimate copy of AVG )

After that I did a few things to save my backup data:

1- I compressed all my small exe program folders with winrar to rar files. I run setup directly from these rar files to install small size programs.

2- For Bigger programs I use Ultra ISO. I have made images of Office 2007, and many other programs that are in 100s of MB or in GBs in size .I run their installation from the virtual drives mounting the ISO files.

As many viruses infect exe files, I have so far been able to save my backup data from infection for last one year.

For Windows Installation Drive (My C: Drive)

If I feel like my Windows Installation is infected now, I simply restore image I created using Acronis True image after the clean installation of Windows Vista with all programs I use. It takes 5 Minutes.

I use portable Anti-viruses sometimes to check only.

Use EZ antivirus
Download from here
Try to find a zip or rar file file with a crack.
The version that I have installed even gets automatic updates.
I am very much satisfied with this because ever since I installed it I didn't face any virus problems.
I have used avg, norton and avast before they are useless.

A lot of people have been using Norton Ghost for imaging purposes for quite some time now although the new ways of doing it I am not that adapt with them anymore . I have a pair of portable hard-drives at my disposal to keep my critical data and I have been practicing the habit of not keeping any data that is critical on my internal hard-drives due to fear of virus attacks hence till now I have been relatively safe for the past few years or so .

@Doc Farhan: I'm surprised at you, aren't you using a Gigabyte board? Mine makes an image of my C: drive. I can backup/restore with just F9 during boot and a mouse click!
