The wraps are off a drop-top version of Bugatti's Veyron at last! Called the Grand Sport, the roofless supercar has been in the pipeline for many years and will finally make its official world debut at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance on 16th August.
Featuring a removable roof, the 1,001bhp supercar will certainly offer a wind-in-the-hair experience. Bugatti says it will use "innovative structural solutions" to compensate for the loss of stiffness that comes with chopping the roof off. Other new details include incredible LED lights at the front.
Bugatti will be holding an auction at Pebble Beach allowing mega-rich investors to fight over who gets the rights to own the first model. As for the rest of the limited production run, expect a price tag even larger than that of the £840,000 fixed roof model.

Bugatti execs first confirmed back in April that the Veyron supercar would eventually spawn an even more exclusive roofless model and we are now less than two weeks away from finally seeing the car. The new roofless Veyron will be called the ‘Grand Sport’ and it’s scheduled to make its world debut at the upcoming Pebble Beach Concourse d’Elegance in California.

The Veyron Grand Sport will feature a removable roof and a number of added features exclusive to the new model. Its unique design will also incorporate a number of structural changes designed to ensure the roadster offers similar performance and passive safety levels as the coupe. According to organizers, the Grand Sport will feature the same 8.0L quad-turbo W16 engine and 1001hp (746kW) output as the regular hard top. The press release also confirms that it will be able to accelerate from 0-62mph in 2.5 seconds and reach a top speed of 252mph (406km/h), although this is most likely with the roof fixed securely in place.

According to Bugatti’s communication chief, Georges Keller, the roofless ‘targa’ option was the only one available to Bugatti because there was no other solution which could fit with the car’s safety cage. While the roof will be removable, there will be no storage space for it within the car, so the cover will have to be taken off at home. Most low-volume super cars use targa panels because of the low cost of development and to retain the structural integrity of the chassis.

Following its debut on August 16 at Pebble Beach, chassis number 001 of the new 2009 Grand Sport will be sold at auction to help raise funds for the Pebble Beach Company Foundation charity group.

The wraps – and the roof – have come off the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport here in Monterey, finally answering a question few have asked and even fewer will sample.

As you'd expect, Bugatti hasn't just hacked the roof off the Veyron and gone to the pub. The windshield is slightly higher, the daytime running lights have been tweaked and then there's the showpiece: a removable, transparent polycarbonate roof, which blends the A-pillars into two painted carbon fiber strips that lead into the massive air intakes feeding the 1001 hp, quad-turbocharged, W16.

If you stow the roof at home for the world's fastest open-air, four-wheeled experience and the heavens decide to open, a folding roof stored in the luggage compartment can be – according to Bugatti – "opened like an umbrella." With the soft-top in place, speeds are limited to an incredibly low 130 km/h (81 mph), otherwise, the Grand Sport can hit 252 mph with the polycarbonate roof and 224 mph with the top removed.

Bugatti made several structural enhancements to ensure the Grand Sport shares the same chassis rigidity and safety standards as its fixed roof counterpart. The monocoque has been reinforced around the side skirts and transmission tunnel, the doors feature new longitudinal beams, and the air intakes have been redesigned to include ten-centimeter-wide carbon fiber elements to protect occupants in the event of rollover.

Only 150 examples will be made available, with the first 50 going to registered Bugatti customers. The first model will be auctioned off at the Gooding & Company auction tomorrow night, with all the profits over the 1.4 million euro ($2.05 million) sticker going to charity.







The very first copy of the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport has been auctioned off for just $2.9 million. A bargain in my opinion if you consider the almost assured value increase in future. Watch the auction in the video below!
