Pakistan allrounder springs a surprise

Afridi announces 'retirement' from Tests

Osman Samiuddin

April 12, 2006

Shahid Afridi has announced his `retirement' from Test cricket. In an announcement that caught most people in Pakistan by complete surprise, Afridi told a local TV channel that he was planning to concentrate only on ODI cricket to ready himself for the World Cup in 2007.

But, in a typically Pakistani twist, Afridi said that he would reconsider his `retirement' from Tests after the World Cup.

Full report to follow.

Osman Samiuddin is Pakistan editor of Cricinfo

hes HIGHLY under-rated especially in tests ! i think hes a much better bowler then hes given credit for. i think hes actually better then danish kaneria (over-rated !). plus hes a very good fielder and if its his day then no bowling attack can stand infront of him (remember australia). even if its not his day as batting he adds so much to the team with his fielding and bowling and i think he should be an integral part of **** team in the years to come both in ODI and test. pretty sure he'll come back to test cricket after WC

well.. as woolmer said.. he's a trump card.. they play their chances over him... im my opinion afridi should be kept.. often .. even if he scores 20-30 runs.. the pace at which he scores those runs it boosts teh teams morale.

yes... i do agree tht he is under estimated by the PCB n by the ppl as well...who says tht he isnt a good test match player.....u no tht even if he does score 30 to 50 runs...he makes it much easier for his own team...he comes to bat at a time when the opposing side opts for the new balll....they we he smashes the ball and the way it crashes into the stands and all...this way he gets rid of the shine of the new ball....and tht makes a hell ov a difference...he is an excellent all rounder...and its sad to hear tht he has retired from test - cricket!
