World's Most Conscientious Customer Completes Botched Software Purchase Over A Year Later

Whosoever this guy was, we're truly proud of you.

I just wanted to pass along a story of a truly honest customer.

The software company I work for put out a version available for download early 2007. It was a success, however for the first two months there was a small problem. As soon as you purchased it, you were able to download it BEFORE your credit card was validated. This led to the company getting burned until it was fixed.

Back in 2007 we had a customer who tried to pay for the download in Pakistan, and then paid for it with a debit card. It was the only card payment he had, and it was rejected. He had no other forms of payment, and we had to write it off as a loss while he got to enjoy using his software for free. Whatever, it was our web engineers' mistake that caused it.

In October 2008 a letter came in the mail with a check from a customer for the Download version. Obviously this raised some questions as we could not process a download order paid by check. I opened up the file with the name on it, and lo and behold, there was the guy from Pakistan who we had written off the charge for.


I called him up, and it turns out that he just moved to the US and one of the first things he did when he had gotten a checking account was to send a check to us for the full amount of the software that we had written off over a year and a half prior.


Honesty, and memory like that is hard to find these days. I wonder if coming from another country and culture had anything to do with it.

But it's OK to splurge on a 15,000 Rs graphics card? WTF? Slight double standard there. The OS is a fairly massive piece of software, takes a ridiculously long time and effort to complete.

But no, we have to play our Crysis, or FEAR or whatever else on the latest graphics card but pirate the very basic software that runs the entire PC.

the problem is the Stupid pricing of the software..

Windows Vista Ultoimate costs over 400$..
so does the latest graphics card..

BUT

Windows has a user base of Billions of people..
GX 280 mite be only present in say.. 20 million pCs..

PLUS

Microsft only needs to punch a 20rs Cd and a 20rs Packaging..and sell that for 400$
Nvidia/ATi have to buy transistors, circuits, ICS, capacitors, PCD, and a processing plant to assemble it all, and then Quality test it..

Linux, Sun Office, Messenger, Trillion, Yahoo., Google, all are free...

That is why I usually buy the softwares. For example Photoshop CS3 and Windows Vista. For movies.... warez FTW! ROFL.

That's because of the Piracy. Half of the world is using pirated versions, hence they only cover half of the world. If every person, owning a computer starts to buy legitimate version of the Window, the price MIGHT start making sense.

Not a valid assumption. Doesn't cover the years of R&D, software beta testing and cost, paying the programmers (and their expensive gourmet coffee too), etc.

Pricing is unfortunately linked to US dollar and as a result will fluctuate. But if you are serious enough, you can create a viable organization that can get massive discounts for students, etc. Works well with enough techs backing the idea.

If you know there are free alternatives out there, don't pirate then.

but what about the thousands of man hours that go into WRITING the piece of software that gets burned on a 20rs cd... the thousands of people who worked 9-5 for months and had families to feed, shudnt they get paid for what they worked hard for...

nvidia/ati also have engineers who work many hours a day for many months and then finally develop a new technology card...

the hardware u are talking about on vdo cards costs less than shit... its the R&D cost that they charge from u


USE linux... and be proud of yourself

but i do side with the people that are against intelleectual property rights... they argue that anything anyone thinks of/makes should be the property of everyone because we all are humans, and we all have an indirect role in everythin tht happens around us...

now imagin if the person who invented the wheel had only kept the design to himself...

sharing is caring... so use linux and tell ur frends to use it and help them use it
