I would recommend that you go with a GTX 260 Core 216, it is both faster than the mentioned cards and also future proof with the extra amount of ROP units. If you intend on keeping your card for 2 years then the GT200 series is the way to go because they simply have more ROP units than ATi's cards.

huh...another suggestion that'll confuse him

but, i kinda agree with dany here...per, im not sure if you can find that core216 version here that easily unless you intend to import

there is also a matter of price difrence in both these cards, esspc, when it was slated t launch at a HIGHER price than the standard 260..considering that 260 is already heftily priced....

GTX260 & HD4870....priced almost the same..Should GTX260 be better after an overclock? HD4870 is too hot to be overclocked.

GX series is DDR3,, Ati is DDDR5..so Ati would OC the ram to Hell and over as compared to DDr3..

besides its only the core that gets hot.. ram is seperate issue, and rams usually donot Overheat alot anyway..thats why there are thousands of 3rd party GPU coolers, and rarely 2-43 ram coolers..

summary..
Ati can be Oced in ram without any issues at all..
Ati is also 2k cheaper than GX260..
Newer Drivers have resolved the heat issue n 4870 cards quite a lot..

buying a card depending on how it'll oc is ignorant and fool hardy. cards oc different, some oc well other dont at all.

i had a 8800gts-640 that would oc 150Mhz on core (shaders by multiplier) and about the same on ram

my 8800gtx Wouldnt even oc 1mhz on core, shaders and maybe 50mhz on ram.

similarly i had a x800pro that was a crazy oc'er, my 6800GT was not, my 7800gtx was factory oc'd and wouldnt go much beyond that.

i also had a geforce 4 ti4200 that oc'd okay but my geforce 2 didnt oc much beyond the factory oc.

my voodoo 3 2000 didnt oc at all, neither did my voodoo (didnt try oc'ing that as i didnt know u could oc gpu's as well), neither did my i740

so buying a card with the pre-concieved notion that will oc to "x" cuz everyone else's is, isnt correct.

buy a card based on it's factory clocks, whatever u get beyond that is a bonus (as long as those clocks continue to work that is!)

and for the record i run my 4870 800 core (750 default) and ram is at 1090 (900)

most of the issues with 4870 even at factory clocks had to do with low fan speed programmed into the bios coupled with very high voltage regulator temps (the core and ram were not the primary culprits)

the new core-216 gtx-260 is about 5% on the gtx-260. i wouldnt call that impressive. the price is about $30 more. a much better idea is to get a 1 gig 4870.

both are compared here:
4870-1gig vs core-216 gtx260

or read the conclusion here:
Conclusion

My overclocking question was based upon the fact that the bus width is 448 and a little overclock might result in a big gain.

anyways, Force3d or HIS for a HD4870 ?

... ?
again that is inaccurate. u are forgetting that the 4870 uses gddr5, so if i run my ram at 1000mhz that is effective 4000mhz

at default the 4870 has more mem bandwidth than a gtx-260.
