Square Enix started a Twitch stream yesterday that’s supposed to lead to revealing a new game from their North American offices. That reveal is taking a tremendous amount of time and I don’t think their idea to slowly reveal small bits and pieces is going quite how they planned. A Russian website, though, is reporting that that game they’re slowly but surely teasing is actually the next Deus Ex game, and they have screenshots to prove it.

Square Enix North America may have revealed their newest game, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. Maybe.

The above screenshots of Deus Ex: Mankind Divided have been obtained by unknown means, though they appear to be legitimate we can’t confirm that they are indeed real as of yet. The name of the game was flashed briefly on the Twitch broadcast yesterday, however, though it was very difficult to see. The storyline is obviously unknown, but it’s rumored to still center around Adam Jensen, the protagonist from Human Revolution. From the name we can gather that perhaps this is a turning point in the story, where perhaps a rift is starting to appear between those that choose to augment themselves and those that do not.

The key elements that made the original game so successful also seem to be making a return, with stealth being an appropriate option for most situations. Also, just as in the original, your decision will have an impact on the game mechanics further in the story. That is, should you decide to forgo the stealthy approach and blow everyone to smithereens, then that should alter the enemy strength in the future.

Perhaps this entry into the Deus Ex universe will finally come full circle back to its roots. The original Deus Ex was revolutionary in the level of interaction you could have with your environment, and the intricately woven story that had many different great elements. Maybe instead of the cinematic approach, they’ll actually build a game where you get to play it for a change. Square Enix is capable of great things, though perhaps the quality of the Deus Ex franchise has slipped, even with Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

[Update] It looks like this title is officially confirmed for the Xbox One, PS4 and the PC. Gameinformer was able to get the whole scoop on the game and have a great description of what the story is to entail. It’s official folks!

Set in 2029, two years after the events of Human Revolution, Adam Jensen returns and joins forces with an Interpol-funded task force aiming to hunt down and capture augmented terrorists in a world that now hates and fears transhumans. Jensen has a new suite of augmentations that allow him to cleverly navigate stealth, combat, and social interactions, but how Jensen chooses to solve every problem is entirely up to you.
