Darksiders III Basically Confirmed, Deathinitive Edition Made To Get Spotlight

After THQ dissolved, its IP properties were sold to different publishers. Homefront was sold to Crytek (and then Deep Silver, but that’s another story), while Darksiders eventually got acquired by Nordic Games.

After some months of silence, Darksiders II: Deathinitive Edition was announced and it’s now being launched for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. However, PC gamers are a bit disappointed as they already had Darksiders II and a huge thread was created on the Steam forums, asking Nordic Games to start working on Darksiders III. As a result, a developer replied the following:

Darksiders 2 Deathinitive Edition was just the start. Since we acquired the franchise we were looking for options for doing a DS3. The remaster was just a way to get some spotlight on the franchise again, reactivate the community and have a better starting position for DS3.

This confirms what we already suspected: Darksiders II Deathinitive Edition is a way for people who haven’t played the previous games to get into the franchise, while Nordic Games prepares the third game.

Now the question remains: who will develop Darksiders III? The Deathinitive Edition was made by Gunfire Games, headed by David Adams, former creator of Darksiders. They would be the obvious choice, but they are already working on a brand new IP, Chronos, a VR adventure/RPG; it seems unlikely that they are big enough to handle both projects at once. As for the outrage regarding the PC version of Darksiders II Deathinitive Edition, the developer said:

I think you are overthinking this. The intention of the PC version of Deathinitive Edition was to give it to everybody who spent money on the same content before for free. Unfortunately this wasn’t possible – but not from our side!

Making Darksiders II Deathinitive Edition at all was a natural choice as we could bring it to the current generation of consoles and improve the game in a lot of areas.
