The newest installment in the Alone in the Dark series, Alone in the Dark: Illumination, is going to have a closed multiplayer beta this weekend, letting you explore the Lovecraft inspired town of Lorwich with your friends in a cooperative experience.

Alone in the Dark: Illumination is hosting a closed multiplayer beta this weekend for everyone that pre-ordered through Steam.

If you’ve been one of the people that pre-ordered Alone in the Dark: Illumination through Steam, then you have a chance to play in that closed multiplayer beta. You’ll have three different characters that you can choose from, either the Hunter, the Witch or the Engineer. As one of those you’ll be able to explore three different locales within Lorwich, from the Mines of Lorwich, to the Factory of Fear.

Have you pre-ordered, then you get three great bonuses as well, different player skins for each of the characters, different weapon skins and an exclusive achievement. the Old One, that shows the rest of the world that you’re one of the first to get in on the action.

Alone in the Dark: Illumination continues the HP Lovecraft inspired survival horror storyline that has been a cornerstone of past games. You’ll be able to explore diverse environments through the perspective of four different characters, all the while investigating the dark past of the town of Lorwich.

The first Alone in the Dark brought a unique take gaming and is arguably the father of the modern survival horror genre, but after the initial success it seems that the inspiration may have waned a bit, and mediocracy set in. Nonetheless, Atari’s newest addition at least has all the markings of a good game. But let’s see if they can deliver us into the crushing darkness like they have in the past.

If you do get a chance to play the multiplayer beta, then let us know how it is and how it compares not only to other games in it’s genre, but to it’s historical ancestors as well. The multiplayer beta ends on Monday the 13th of April.
