Motorola’s WiMAX USB adaptor hitting Pakistan?

Email This

What is this country coming to? First we were bombarded with EDGE USB dongles at ridiculous prices, and just when people started to consider their viability, we got EVDO devices (USB dongles and PCMCIA cards) at the very similar price points delivering totally unrivaled data rates. And then there is the still to be implemented 3G (which I don’t see happening anytime in 2009, by the way). All that was left was for one of our beloved WiMAX operators to jump in to the blood fest, and guess who was came up first in the line?

A recent rumor uncovered by our friends at ProPakistani suggests that we might be getting a taste of truly mobile WiMAX soon thanks to the recently launched operator; Wi-Tribe.

According to the article, WiTribe is all set to offer Motorola’s USBw 100 WiMAX adapter to its subscribers [editor's note: Wateen is also rumored to be testing their own WiMAX USB dongle, which might be introduced in the market in about a couple of months' time], relieving them of those hefty WiMAX CPEs and giving them true mobility. But that’s just one side of the dime. WiTribe’s network, which happens to be the youngest in Pakistan is limited to a few cities only, though their situation is a lot better than Mobilink’s Infinity.

Its also quite interesting to note that their plans are the most expensive of every other wireless operator, with 1Mpbs going for Rs. 1700 per month with a limit of 10GB bandwidth. So they need to launch their USB adapter at a very low price point (if not free of cost) to compete with rest of the competition, specially the PTCL EVO which offers 3.1Mbps at Rs. 2000 per month.

that newly launched operator is not even completely successful in their soft launch. Their rates are not competitive at all.

Rates of wi-tribe are high, 1700 for 1 MBps…..and if they introduce USB, then they need to improve their services as well as their rates.

I hope, that they would not charge extra fee to users to change previous clumsy CPEs to this little one.

  4. I THINK THE RATE SHOULD BE 500 OF 1MB
